Wedding days are hectic, with many hours spent having your pictures taken. There are pictures of the bride and groom getting ready, portraits, the reception, and, of course, couple pictures! Have you thought about looking at the detailed photographs? If you do, make a list of the wedding day details you want to be photographed for your big day! What particulars should you include in your luggage? You’ve probably seen the photos of the rings, veil, shoes, and other details, and you’ve probably put a lot of thought into all of these special touches!
Wedding details like florals, shoes, rings, the invitation suite, and all of the family heirlooms that are important to my couples have always been one of my favorite things to photograph on a wedding day. And I’d like to help you get the best shots of them. As your wedding photographer, my goal is to capture not only the interactions between people but also all of your lovely details!
I’ve compiled my top wedding detail shot tips to make things even easier for your wedding photographer!
The Detail Shot
1 | Include time in the timeline for detail photography
A good photographer will not simply point a camera at your invitation and press the shutter; they will take the time to get the light and background just right, as well as style all aspects of the invitation suite to highlight the design. And they’re doing it for every detail! Make sure there’s enough time in your wedding day timeline for detail photography, at least an hour should be set aside for detail photography.
2 | Checklist of what the COUPLE should Pack
Tell the bride ahead of time what details they should remember. Begin collecting all of the items you want to include in your detail shots and place them in a separate box, this will save you time and energy because you will not be searching for items. They should bring all of their personal belongings to the location where they are getting ready, not the ceremony location! That way, they’ll feel secure and know exactly what to bring and where to put it; the last thing you want is a bride who isn’t sure what to do or have, you’ll have a better chance of succeeding if you make them feel prepared. Don’t forget about the groom!
Details of the bride:
- Engagement ring
- Veil
- Shoes
- Jewelry
- Perfume
- Clutch
- Bouquet
- Hairpieces
Details of the Groom
- Shoes
- Tie
- Watch
- Cufflinks
- Pocket square
- Cologne
- Boutonnieres
Others:
- The rings
- Gifts or favors for the guests
- Welcome bag
- Seating cards
- Menus
- Wedding invitation – suggested having two copies for this will allows being styled with both sides showing in the same photo. Your names and a dummy address should be calligraphed on one of the invitations.
- Something Old, New, Borrowed, and Blue
3 | Have the Right Supplies
A nice hanger for the dress is the most forgotten item on the wedding day, this isn’t a big deal, but it’s nice to have a pretty hanger instead of the plastic one from the Bridal Store! When you’re in a tight space and don’t have anywhere to hang the dress, command hooks come in handy. Here are also few things that I recommend;
- a cute hanger for your dresses
- a velvet ring box – I have plenty in my kit too!
- personal mementos
- extrafloral clippings
4 | Assign Someone in Charge of the Details
Make a list of all the details you want to be photographed well in advance of your wedding day. Once you’ve created your list, hand it over to someone who will be in your getting ready area with you. Your wedding day can be challenging, extremely busy, and overwhelming; therefore, the couple should appoint someone to be in charge of bringing all of these items and having them ready, as well as gathering all of the items for your photographer. Nothing will be overlooked, and your photographer will not have to waste time searching for them all.
5 | Neutral Styling Surface
A neutral surface can meet the needs in this situation. It can be anything neutral in color, such as the styling boards, a canvas, a linen piece of fabric, or a marble tabletop are all possibilities. Styling boards are fantastic for bringing your wedding details together.
Bonus
All you need is some lovely light, and it doesn’t have to be a big one. The ring shot, in particular, requires good lighting. The rings during the day, with a natural light source of sunlight, are the best source of lightning. Find the light and place your details there! The key is to find or create the best light.
Include some funny elements to make it into the photos, not everything has to be an important detail. Adding little tokens of who you are or things you love to flat lays can be a lot of fun. Some people have brought a Harry Potter book, small dinosaur figurines, polaroids of the two of them, special trinkets, and so on. However, these photos will be much more meaningful if they are truly representative of you and your wedding day.
Final Words
On your wedding day, there are so many things to photograph! Each wedding is unique, but it’s critical to document all of the details that are important to you. These are items in which you have invested time and money, and they must be photographed. This will not only add variety to your wedding album, but it will also help you remember all of the small details from your big day! To remember more about your precious and unforgettable big day!
